How to Create Lasting Identity Shifts: A Beginnerβs Guide to Transforming Your Self-Concept for Success
Oct 28, 2024Have you ever reached a point where you knew something had to change, but fear held you back? I’ve been there. After years of working as a freelancer, helping build other people’s dreams, I learned so much and am grateful for the experiences and lessons. But deep down, I knew it was time to step into my own vision. Walking away from the security of what I knew—and the financial safety net it provided—felt like standing at the edge of a cliff, terrified of what might happen if I jumped.
This is where the power of identity shifts comes in. When you change the way you see yourself, your actions follow. For years, I operated from an identity rooted in survival—doing what I needed to pay the bills and keep going. But the moment I began shifting my identity to align with the version of me who believed in her ability to create a successful, soul-aligned business, everything started to change.
In this guide, we’ll explore how to create lasting identity shifts for success—whether you’re stuck in a career that no longer lights you up or struggling with self-doubt in your personal life. The process of shifting your identity is about more than just thinking positively; it’s about reprogramming your subconscious mind to believe in your ability to become the person you need to be to achieve your goals. What Are Identity Shifts and Why Do They Matter for Success?
At its core, an identity shift is about transforming how you see yourself—and in turn, how you show up in your life and business. When I was first trying to move from survival mode into a space of thriving, I realized that so much of what was holding me back wasn’t external circumstances but the way I viewed myself. I had always identified as someone who "makes do" or just "gets by." And that’s exactly how I continued to live, despite my best efforts.
Your identity is the foundation of everything you do. It affects your decisions, your actions, and even your beliefs about what’s possible for you. When you see yourself as someone who struggles, it’s hard to make decisions that align with abundance and success. On the other hand, when you begin to shift your identity to align with the version of you who already achieves their goals, your behaviors and choices start to shift, too. This is why identity shifts are so powerful—they don’t just change how you think, they change how you live.
For me, the shift started when I asked myself, “What if I saw myself as someone who could run a successful business, one where I’m sharing my own voice and making a real impact?” That simple question opened up a world of possibilities. The more I practiced seeing myself in that new identity, the more my decisions and actions began to reflect it.
Identity shifts matter because they go beyond surface-level changes. They address the root of how you see yourself and what you believe you deserve. By changing your identity, you change the trajectory of your life.
The Psychology Behind Identity and Behavior
Our identity is more powerful than we often realize. It’s like an invisible script that dictates how we behave, what we believe we’re capable of, and even the opportunities we go after. The truth is, so much of our behavior is driven by our subconscious beliefs about who we are. These beliefs are often formed early in life through experiences, family dynamics, and societal messages. For me, growing up with the experience of being given away, then losing my adoptive mother at a young age, deeply impacted how I saw myself. For years, I didn’t even realize that part of my identity was shaped by the belief that I had to make myself small, easy, and unproblematic to be accepted.
The psychology behind identity and behavior is rooted in the idea that we act in alignment with who we believe we are. If your self-concept includes limiting beliefs like, “I’m not good with money” or “I’m not worthy of success,” those beliefs will show up in the decisions you make. You’ll subconsciously hold yourself back from pursuing opportunities or taking risks because your identity isn’t aligned with success.
On the other hand, when you start to shift your identity, your behaviors naturally follow. It’s not just about thinking differently—it’s about embodying a new version of yourself. When I began shifting my identity from someone who had to play small to someone capable of building a thriving business, I noticed the ripple effect in my behavior. I started making choices that aligned with that new self-image. I took bigger risks, trusted my instincts more, and pursued opportunities that scared me.
This is why identity shifts are crucial for long-term success. If we only focus on changing behaviors without addressing the identity beneath them, we’ll often find ourselves stuck in the same patterns. But when we work on reprogramming our subconscious and aligning our identity with who we want to become, our actions start to match that new version of ourselves.
Recognizing the Limiting Identities Holding You Back
Before we can shift our identity, we have to recognize the limiting beliefs and identities that are holding us back. These beliefs often operate beneath the surface, making them tricky to spot, but they show up in how we think, feel, and act. For me, I spent years feeling like I didn’t have anything valuable to share. I often believed others were smarter or more capable than me, which kept me playing small. That belief was running the show, even though I didn’t fully realize it at the time.
So, how do you recognize the limiting identities you’ve been carrying? Start by asking yourself: What are the stories I tell myself about who I am? Are they stories of lack, struggle, or failure? For example, you might think, “I’m not good enough,” or “Other people know more than I do.” These are clues to the limiting identities that are shaping your decisions and actions.
In my case, once I realized I had been identifying as someone who didn’t have much to offer, I could see how that belief influenced my choices—whether it was staying behind the scenes in my freelance work or underpricing my services. I was playing small because I didn’t fully believe in my own worth. Once I became aware of this limiting identity, I could start the process of shifting it.
Awareness is the first step. You can’t change what you don’t acknowledge. Take some time to reflect on the limiting beliefs and identities that might be holding you back. Write them down. Once you see them clearly, you can begin to question them: “Is this really true?” More often than not, these beliefs are simply outdated stories that no longer serve you.
How to Create Lasting Identity Shifts for Success
Now that you’ve recognized the limiting identities holding you back, it’s time to create lasting shifts. Shifting your identity isn’t about flipping a switch overnight—it’s a process of gradually embodying a new version of yourself, one small decision at a time. When I first started to shift from seeing myself as someone with little to share to someone who could build a thriving, impactful business, it didn’t happen instantly. It began with tiny moments where I chose to act from a new identity, even if it felt uncomfortable.
One of the critical practices for me was changing the way I spoke about myself and shared my thoughts. I used to start sentences with clients by saying, “Well, I don’t really know the answer, but here’s what I think,” which led them to lack confidence in what I shared—and in turn, I perpetuated my own lack of confidence. I had to begin by acknowledging my entire journey and all I had learned along the way. Journaling helped me integrate this awareness, reminding me of how far I had come and that I knew far more than I gave myself credit for. From there, I began speaking with confidence, letting go of words that invalidated my expertise before I even shared it.
Another key tool was using affirmations, but here’s the key: they had to feel believable. If you go too far from where you are now, your mind will reject them. Instead of saying, “I’m wildly successful” when I didn’t believe it yet, I would start with something like, “I’m fully capable of creating success.” Repeating affirmations daily—especially in moments when old limiting beliefs surfaced—helped me rewire my subconscious mind, little by little.
Of course, nothing shifts without action. The key to lasting identity change is taking action in alignment with your new self-concept. Start with small steps. For me, it was raising my prices or speaking up about my own ideas rather than hiding behind someone else’s. Each small action solidifies your new identity, and before long, it starts to feel natural.
Finally, consistency is what makes these shifts stick. Repetition is essential when it comes to reprogramming your subconscious. Keep affirming, keep journaling, and keep taking small aligned actions. Over time, you’ll notice that you naturally start to embody this new version of yourself without having to force it.
Reprogramming Your Subconscious Mind to Support a New Identity
Reprogramming your subconscious mind is key to making your new identity stick. The subconscious is where all your deeply held beliefs live, including the ones that have been shaping your behavior for years. These beliefs can either support your growth or hold you back. To create lasting identity shifts, you need your subconscious to align with your new self-concept.
One of the most powerful tools I’ve used is affirmations. Rather than focusing on generic affirmations, I made sure they felt deeply personal and authentic to where I was in my journey. I began repeating affirmations like, “It’s possible there are people out there who want what I’m offering,” and, “I can make sales at any moment without it having to take long.” These helped shift my mindset from scarcity and doubt to one of possibility and trust. The key is consistency—affirmations work best when repeated regularly, even when the old beliefs still feel strong. Over time, these affirmations began to replace the limiting beliefs I had carried for so long.
Journaling became another essential practice. I often used it to reflect on my progress and remind myself of how far I’d come. For example, I would write about the ways in which I had been showing up, the lessons I’d learned along the way, and how those experiences had prepared me to move forward with more confidence. Journaling allowed me to process any lingering doubts or fears and helped me integrate new beliefs, such as trusting in my ability to navigate discomfort and make meaningful changes.
I also paid close attention to the language I used in conversations, both with myself and with others. For years, I would catch myself starting sentences with, “I’m not sure, but…” or, “This might not be right, but…” It became clear that these phrases were undermining my confidence. Once I made a conscious effort to speak from a place of conviction, I noticed a shift. For example, I started affirming, “There are people who are looking for the transformation I provide,” and “I trust that my offers will resonate with the right people.” These subtle changes helped me reinforce my new identity not only to others but to myself.
Reprogramming your subconscious is not about making huge leaps all at once. It’s about the small, consistent practices that gradually shift your internal dialogue and beliefs. Over time, these new beliefs take root, allowing you to fully step into the version of yourself you’ve been working to become.
Overcoming Resistance and Setbacks in the Process
Creating lasting identity shifts is a powerful process, but it doesn’t come without its challenges. One thing you can almost count on is encountering resistance along the way. This resistance often shows up as fear, self-doubt, or hesitation. For me, the biggest transformations didn’t come from small steps—they came from taking leaps of faith and making big, bold commitments. These leaps allowed me to feel like I was timeline jumping into an entirely new identity, bypassing the slow, incremental changes that felt safe but limiting.
When I decided to fully step away from the safety net of my freelance work and go all in on building my dream business, it was terrifying. But that big decision allowed me to grow in ways I never would have if I had stayed where I was comfortable. There’s something about making a large commitment—whether it’s a financial investment, a bold career move, or leaving behind something that no longer serves you—that forces you to rise to the occasion. It was in these moments that I saw the most rapid shifts in my identity and my results.
Of course, taking leaps of faith doesn’t mean the resistance disappears. In fact, it often intensifies because you’re stepping so far outside your comfort zone. But what I’ve learned is that the bigger the leap, the greater the opportunity for transformation. Each time I made a big commitment that aligned with my new identity, it was as though I was accelerating my growth—almost like jumping to a new timeline where the version of me I was striving to become already existed.
That said, self-compassion is still crucial during these moments of transition. Taking big leaps often means facing bigger challenges, and it’s easy to get discouraged when things don’t immediately go as planned. But I’ve learned to be kind to myself during those times, reminding myself that the discomfort is part of the process. Growth doesn’t always feel good, but it’s a sign that you’re evolving.
In those moments of resistance, what helped me the most was trusting the process and recognizing that setbacks are part of the journey. When you take bold steps toward your new identity, it’s important to stay committed, even when the fear and uncertainty arise. Trust that the leap will pay off, even if the results don’t show up immediately. It’s these leaps of faith that have allowed me to step fully into the version of myself that I had once only imagined.
Living as Your Most Successful Self
Once you’ve gone through the process of shifting your identity, the next step is to live in alignment with that new self every day. This doesn’t mean that challenges suddenly disappear or that you’ll never feel doubt again. But when you’ve committed to your new identity, you start showing up in a way that reflects who you are becoming, not who you used to be.
For me, living as my most successful self means continuously embracing the mindset that I’m capable of creating the reality I desire. It’s about stepping into every day with the awareness that the decisions I make, the way I speak about myself, and the actions I take are all in alignment with the version of me that’s already thriving. This version of me isn’t afraid to take risks, trust her instincts, or ask for what she’s worth. And when fear or doubt creeps in, I remind myself that I’ve taken big leaps before and that I can continue to do so.
Consistency is key here. Every day is an opportunity to reinforce your new identity. Whether it’s through the way you talk to yourself, the boundaries you set, or the bold moves you make in your business, every choice becomes a reflection of the person you are becoming. One of the most important things I’ve learned is that living as your most successful self isn’t about reaching a destination—it’s about continuously embodying that identity, no matter where you are in the journey.
As you move forward, it’s also important to surround yourself with the right support and environment. Your identity is influenced by the people you spend time with and the spaces you operate in. I’ve found that when I surround myself with people who believe in me and environments that reflect the success I’m working toward, it reinforces my new identity even more. It’s a reminder that I’m stepping into a version of myself that’s expansive and capable of achieving everything I set out to do.
Remember, living as your most successful self isn’t about perfection. It’s about being in constant alignment with the version of you who is already living the life you desire. It’s about making decisions from that place and trusting that, even when things feel uncertain, you’re on the right path. The more you live in alignment with this new identity, the more your external reality will begin to reflect it.
